On the first lap of a local circuit in Geraardsbergen, Campenaerts joined an attack set up by Kasper Asgreen and Matej Mohoric. The Qhubeka-Nexthash rider then took the initiative to try and reduce the leading group, but couldn’t prevent the leaders from being caught with 25km to go.
“I was hoping for more today, but I’m happy with the way it played out. If I wanted to play a role in the general classification, then I couldn’t wait too long. I raced aggressively and that’s what I enjoyed the most. Matej was just really strong today and was one step ahead of everyone.”
Has Campenaerts done enough to warrant a spot on the Belgian world championship team? “That’s not my decision,” he retorted. “I showed I have good form, but a national team selection is about more than that. It’s also about your role in the team.”
