On Wednesday 20 August, the 20th edition of the Renewi Tour will start in Terneuzen. After five days, the only UCI WorldTour stage race in the Benelux will conclude with a tough stage in Leuven. In doing so, the Renewi Tour recycles the Tour of Leuven, which featured on the calendar last year as a one-day race. A sustainable sports solution, but also and above all a maximum sustainability result for the Renewi Tour organisation again this year.
Leuven-Leuven will be the final stage of the 2025 Renewi Tour on Sunday 24 August. The course builds on the 2021 World Championships and therefore also on the course of previous editions of the Tour of Leuven, formerly GP Poeske Scherens and Memorial Jef Scherens, with many climbs in the city centre of Leuven and the wider region around Leuven.
The integration of the Tour of Leuven into the Renewi Tour was achieved in consultation with the Stoempers, the Leuven cycling club behind the Tour of Leuven, and the city of Leuven. Until at least 2028, the capital of Flemish Brabant will be the start and finish of the final stage of the Renewi Tour. Just like last year’s Tour of Leuven, Special Olympics riders will also compete in a race on the local circuit in Leuven, prior to the final stage of the Renewi Tour.
“As organisers, we are delighted with the integration of the Tour of Leuven as the final stage of the Renewi Tour. The city of Leuven, one of the four host cities of the successful 2021 Road World Championships, was looking for a legacy at the very highest level. With the Renewi Tour and the final stage, Leuven will welcome all UCI WorldTour teams and the best riders to the start line,” said Christophe Impens of organiser Golazo.
Course
The Renewi Tour 2025 will start in the Dutch province of Zeeland with a flat stage from Terneuzen to Breskens on Wednesday 20 August. Cycling fans will also be able to attend the official team presentation in Terneuzen’s market square on the eve of the event.
From Thursday, the Renewi Tour crosses to Belgian soil. The second stage is a West Flemish stage from Blankenberge to Ardooie. On Friday, the starting shot will sound in Aalter in East Flanders and the finish will be in Geraardsbergen after a “classic” stage through the Flemish Ardennes. Along the way, the riders will climb the Taaienberg, Bosberg and Muur van Geraardsbergen. The riders will finish on the Vesten, a fixture on the Renewi Tour.
The penultimate stage, on Saturday 23 August, is a flat stage from Riemst to Bilzen-Hoeselt across (Belgian) Limburg and Liège territory. The grand finale will follow a day later in Leuven. There is no time trial on the programme this year, which means that the Renewi Tour offers even more opportunities for the classics specialists to take a shot at the overall victory in a stage race. Last year, the overall victory went to Tim Wellens for the fourth time, a record.
Thanks to close cooperation with Safe Cycling, the entire route will be scrutinised, and every effort will be made to further optimise the safety of the riders
Sustainability
The Renewi Tour does not just want to be an attractive and safe sporting event. Organiser Golazo and recycler and title partner Renewi are also striving for maximum sustainability. The sustainability initiatives rolled out last year will be continued in 2025: waste zones in the riders’ village to collect the teams’ waste separately, use of electric cars by the organisers, maximum use of fixed or green power, a VIP area where only glass and chinaware are used and a balanced range of healthy and vegetarian options, specially designed medals made from recycled bidons, etc.
Otto de Bont, Chief Executive Officer Renewi: “For us, the Renewi Tour is much more than a cycling race. It is a chance for us to showcase top-level sport playing a pioneering role in social responsibility too. Together with Golazo, we are constantly looking for innovative ways to process waste carefully during a tour, by encouraging reuse and converting the remaining waste into usable raw materials. Thanks to our close collaboration, we are building a more sustainable future for cycling together.”
